What to Knit For Beginners

By Knitting Writer

So you’ve made it through the knitting phase and are now ready to start learning to knit a blanket. The good news is that there are a few things that you will need to have in order to keep yourself on track. In addition to the blanket, you will also need some pattern books or even an online knitting dictionary to help you keep track of your progress. If you’re just beginning, I recommend that you start with a simple project such as a pillow or a small hat. Once you have your basics down, you can begin to learn more advanced knitting techniques.

There are a few steps that you will want to take when learning how to knit a blanket. There is a specific order to everything, so make sure that you follow the correct order before getting frustrated. These are the basic steps:

What to Knit For Beginners: knit a single, straight row. There are different knitting patterns for beginners that will tell you which is the best way to cast on stitches; however, by simply following one step at a time you will find that it is very easy. The best cast-on’s are the tight and snug, making sure that the row remains smooth and sturdy before tightening the wraps. Loose wraps can often lead to yarn ends snagging and slipping out of stitches.

What to Do Next: Now that your row is smooth and sturdy, it is time to move onto the next part of your project, the patterns. There are several options for beginners in the free knitting patterns available on the internet or in your local library. A quick search on Google will point you in the right direction, and most sites will offer at least some sort of beginner level knitting pattern. Once you have found the pattern you like, read through the directions carefully to familiarize yourself with the terminology and process before moving on to the fun stuff. Once you have learned the terminology and worked through the process, you are ready to start making your first blanket!

What to Do After Making a Blanket: If you have made a blanket and would like to learn how to knit a second one, keep the same project in mind. Knitting a blanket takes repetition, and sometimes, just plain keeping repeating yourself will get the job done. Keep in mind that you will be working in different spaces, so you may need to knit across the width of your blanket at a time. This is nothing that can’t be worked through with repetition. As with working a first blanket, if you are having trouble working in the round, you can simply start again. There are many free knitting patterns available for beginners.

What to Wear: Once your project is finished, you want to wear something comfortable. Beginners especially often forget their clothing and end up in sweatpants and a t-shirt. Be sure to check out your clothes size before committing to a project. This is especially important if it’s the first time wearing socks or having long hair. If the weather is warm, try to wear a sweater with short hair, if it’s cool, wear a pair of shorts.

What to Bring: Another thing to consider when it comes to what to knit for beginners is what to bring with you. A beginners kit typically includes needles, yarn and patterns. Make sure that you’re aware of your space before committing to a project and pack appropriate items. If you’re traveling, you’ll need a stool.

Where to Begin: Knitting can be intimidating, especially for beginners. If this is your first project, start with something small and easy. Try a project like a blanket. Once you master that, move on to bigger projects. You don’t have to tackle an entire beginner’s kit; you can start with one project, one needle and a ball of yarn and continue working from that point.
