Whether you knit or crochet, the world of knitting is filled with different types of knitting materials and different types of knitting tools. Even if you are knitting a blanket, afghan or perhaps a sweater, there are fundamental knitting tools and terms that you should become familiar with. The terms crocheting and knitting will help you better understand what you are doing when you start to knit. This is important since the foundation of this craft is based on knitting.
You probably already understand the basic anatomy of a knitting needle. While most knitting needles are similar in shape, they differ slightly in size. This is the first stitch you will make with different types of knitting needles.
Knitting with circular knitting needles is very similar to cable stitches except you will be working in rounds. Instead of inserting the needle from the back, the needle tips will be facing when you pull the needle back out. In order to work a pattern, you will need two sets of standard size circular knitting needles. When learning how to knit with circular knitting needles, it is helpful to work in several sizes of stitches. There are six sizes of stitches commonly referred to as round stitches.
Knitters typically use the following sizes of stitches: large circular needles for long stitches, small circular needles for short stitches, tapering or zero-sts needle tips for creating rim-free stockings, and needle tips of half stitches and full stitches for creating decorative items like doilies. It is also possible to use interchangeable needles if you prefer to alternate between the sizes. Many experienced knitters recommend the use of two needles for larger projects and smaller projects.
The primary advantage of working with straight needles is that the yarn does not have to be threaded. However, using single point needles makes precision work difficult because the fabric is more likely to slip and slide across the needles. Single point needles are particularly useful for knitting stockings and other bulky items. Because it is difficult to control the amount of yarn that passes through the needle, it is usually best to use double-sided tape to hold the fabric onto the straight needles. This helps to prevent the fabric from slipping off the needles.
When working in circular patterns, the primary advantages of knitting with double-sided tape is that it prevents the fabric from slipping off the needles and is easy to use when knitting hats and stockings. In addition, the tape allows you to control the thickness of the fabric. Many knitting stores offer a selection of double-sided tapes, typically used for knitting socks, hats, and scarves. Some specialty stores offer knitting supplies that are specifically designed to be used with double-sided tape so that consumers can take their projects home and try them on in the comfort of their own homes.
